Article Marketing Basics - What is an Article Writing Niche?


New to article marketing? Let's start from the basics and talk about what an article writing niche is.

A niche is a smaller segment of a market. For example, Internet Marketing is a huge market. If you break it down into smaller segments, you will be able to see many niches - SEO, PPC, article marketing, sales copywriting, etc. These are all niches.

So writing about a niche means that you are focusing on just one smaller segment. Sometimes, this appears counter-intuitive. After all, everyone wants to target the bigger market - big equals more money. But that is not necessarily true when it comes to article writing.

You see, when you write for a more focused audience, you attract more targeted visitors. Some searching for "Internet Marketing" may be looking for information, products, tools, etc. It's just not easy to tell. So how can you present the right offer to the visitor? That's right - you can't. That is why conversion rates for these articles are very low. You need a lot of general traffic to sell something.

For niche articles, the opposite is true. You need very few visitors to be making sales. For instance, your article may be about article writing tools. You know that your readers are interested in writing solutions. So you present them with the right offers - software, scripts and tools that will help them with their article writing.

Blog Commenting is Good For SEO But Article Marketing is Better


One thing that is crucial to improving your website or blog's SEO is to keep building relevant backlinks. Two effective ways of doing this are to write thoughtful, non-spammy comments on blogs, and by writing and submitting articles related to your niche, with links back to your site in the author bio-box.

Comments certainly are worth doing from time to time. It's a statistical certainty that some of the blogs you comment on will be "dofollow" (even if the blogger doesn't advertise the fact). This means that your contributions will confer direct SEO benefit to the URL you include.

Even if the blogs are "nofollow" the strategy is still worthwhile. You are getting known by the blogs' readers as well as the bloggers themselves. This is good for SEO because if you are contributing insightful and relevant comments you'll gradually become known for your expert knowledge and helpful attitude. Some bloggers are sure to link to your blog or website as a result.

There are downsides to this strategy, however. For instance, it takes time to find the right blogs to comment on. Then you have to read through the posts to find out which ones you can respond well to.

There are psychological effects as well. Endlessly hopping from blog to blog and writing short, pithy thoughts can shorten your attention span, making you impatient and anxious every time you sit down at your PC.

Also, while you can write lots of comments in a short space of time, it doesn't make you feel as if you've really achieved much at the end. Because the SEO benefits take a while to kick in, you always feel as if you have to do more and more. That's not good for your stress levels!

Article marketing, however, doesn't have these negative aspects. And it is a more potent form of off-site SEO. Just one backlink from a good, comprehensive article can be very valuable SEO-wise. It will probably also give you more clicks over time, too.

It's also quite calming. You are collecting and focusing your thoughts and mulling over things. And while you wouldn't want to waffle and pad an article, you can expand on thoughts and go off on the odd tangent.

You also have a greater sense of achievement after writing an article of several hundred words. It's a bit like eating a big, filling and nutritious meal - as opposed to snacking on coffee and donuts!

For these reasons it's important not to go overboard on writing comments, and to spend a greater proportion of your time and energy writing and submitting articles instead.

Article Marketing is by far one of the most effective methods of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to drive massive traffic to your websites.  It is however, not a new tool, for it has been around a lot longer than most people think.  With the emergence of new traffic generation tools like social bookmarking or blogging, article marketing is somehow still preferred by many Internet Marketers.

To put it simply, article marketing is the act of writing articles about a niche topic you are passionate or knowledgeable about.  It is also what many people refer to as content marketing.

Establish an article submission schedule

To see results in article marketing, you do not write just one article and expect to bring millions of visitors to your website.  Try to set up a writing schedule, two articles per week would probably be a good start.  As far as possible, write a few articles on the same topic, then move on to another topic.  Once you decide on your writing schedule, try your best to adhere to it.  This is because more articles written equals to more traffic to your website.

Focus on writing a good title

The ability to write a good title is the first step to effective article marketing.  It is the first thing that catches people's attention.  If you are able to write a catchy title that arouses curiosity, it entices more readers to click on it.  On the other hand, a plain and boring title usually sees very low click-through rate.  A good title is also one which includes the main keyword you are targeting at.

Spin a few versions of your article for submission to different article sites

Another important rule in article marketing is to spin various versions of the original article for submission to various article syndication sites.  Although it would be easy to write an article and submit the same article to 50 article sites, such a move might not rank you well in the search engines.  The search engine spiders have a way to detect identical contents and having duplicated articles would be seen as spam, thus affecting your ranking in the search engines in the long run.

Most beginners feel daunted by writing articles. As a general guideline, keep your articles to between 500 to 800 words and spend no more than two hours in writing one. Most article directories have a minimum words limit of 500 words. Writing less than 500 words somehow might also affect your ranking in the search engines.

Leave your links and information about your website in the resource box

The resource box is the most important place where you could leave your links and information about your website.  This is also the very last point of contact with your reader before he or she moves on to another article.  It is also the place where you include your call to action and encourage people to visit your website.  For the benefit of SEO, it is important to include two different kinds of links.  One is the direct link to your website and the other is an anchor link using your main targeted keyword which the reader can click.
